Grand Rapids Court Records
Grand Rapids court cases are heard in the 17th Circuit Court and the 61st District Court, both located in Kent County. The 61st District Court serves Grand Rapids for misdemeanor cases, civil disputes under $25,000, and traffic violations. The 17th Circuit Court handles felony cases, family court, and larger civil matters. Both courts use the statewide MiCOURT case search system.
You can search Grand Rapids court cases at micourt.courts.michigan.gov/case-search. Search by party name or case number. The system shows case type, status, docket entries, and scheduled dates. The Grand Rapids court at the Kent County Courthouse, 180 Ottawa NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49503, also has public access terminals in the clerk's office for in-person searches. Certified copies of court records require an in-person visit or written request with fees.
Note: Non-public cases such as juvenile records, mental health proceedings, and adoptions do not appear in MiCOURT results.
Criminal History Records in Grand Rapids
Criminal history searches for Grand Rapids residents are done through the Michigan State Police ICHAT system. The cost is $10 per name-based search. ICHAT reports felony convictions and serious misdemeanor arrests from all 83 counties. It covers records from any Michigan court that reported to the state, including Kent County. Access ICHAT at apps.michigan.gov/ICHAT.
What ICHAT does not cover is equally important to know. Federal offenses, tribal court records, traffic violations, juvenile adjudications, and records from other states are all outside its scope. For those, you would need a fingerprint-based check through an approved vendor or a direct request to the relevant court. Fingerprint checks typically cost $50 to $70 and are required for licensing and certain professional certifications.
For state prison inmates, the MDOC Offender Tracking Information System (OTIS) is free at mdocweb.state.mi.us/otis2/otis2.aspx. You can search by name or MDOC number. OTIS shows current inmates, parolees under MDOC supervision, and those on probation. Records are removed 3 years after discharge.

The city must respond within 5 business days. An extension of up to 10 more business days is allowed if the request is complex or involves a large volume of records. Written notice is required for any extension. Fees for copies follow state law under MCL 15.234. Labor is capped at 6 times the state minimum wage. Standard paper copies are typically $0.10 per page.
